Wheaton Tissue Grinders

New product

There are many methods available to breakdown and separate tissue and cells. Mortar and pestle tissue grinders are commonly used due to their gentle grinding action. This helps preserve large molecules, organelles, cells and viruses. WHEATON manufactures tissue grinders in different sizes, materials and configurations to fit most laboratory applications.

Tissue Grinder Types and Applications

  • Tapered Tissue Grinders — Ideal for tough tissue such as heart, lung, muscle, and connective tissue. These glass-on-glass grinders feature a long tapered design to maximize grinding efficiency.
  • Potter-Elvehjem Tissue Grinders — A good general purpose tissue grinder. This is typically used with soft tissue such as brain, liver and to break down tissue for primary cell culture.
  • Tenbroeck Tissue Grinders — This tissue grinder has a hollow handle to hold ice or water to cool the sample. This feature makes it useful for preserving delicate cells such as liver, intestines or heart cells. In addition to fragile cells, this grinder is used for the isolation of large molecules from the cell.
  • Dounce Tissue Grinders — One of the most popular tissue grinders, it is typically used to open cells to release molecules, organelles, or viruses. The Dounce tissue grinder is usually used on cell pellets rather than excised tissue samples.

All tissue grinders are manufactured from WHEATON 33 low extractable borosilicate glass that conforms to USP Type I and ASTM E-438 Type I, Class A requirements and replacement parts can be purchased separately.
